![]() ![]() Ocean draws listeners in with sweet melodies and sticky hooks, but adds a layer of emotional depth through the stories he weaves into his songs. On “Channel Orange,” Ocean similarly spins fictional tales inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown or about the hopeless love between a man and a sex worker at the Las Vegas Pyramid hotel. While these songs convey the emotions that Ocean has probably felt at some point in his life, he has never experienced being left behind by a spaceship that’s jetting his lover off to space - at least, not to my knowledge. “nostalgia, ULTRA” showcases Frank Ocean’s affinity for storytelling through music, a thematic throughline that appears on both “Channel Orange” and “Blonde.” In similar fashion to “Channel Orange,” “nostalgia, ULTRA”’s narratives about loss and heartbreak are, for the most part, fictional. A ghostwriter working under the name Christopher Breaux, Frank Ocean worked in Los Angeles writing for the likes of Beyonce and Justin Bieber - check out Frank’s rendition of Bieber’s “ Big Enough.” After being shelved by Def Jam, Frank Ocean exploded onto the scene with his 2011 debut free-to-download mixtape, “nostalgia, ULTRA.” Looking back, the 14-track project planted the seeds for what fans would eventually see on his later projects. Looking back at the impact both “Channel Orange” and “Blonde” had on music and pop culture alike, it’s hard to believe that just a couple of years prior to this win, the “Nikes” singer was practically unknown. His two albums - “Channel Orange” and “Blonde” - are highly regarded by fans and critics alike, the former album having won him a Grammy for Best Contemporary Urban Album in 2013. ![]() ![]() More from the decade of decadence.Today, Frank Ocean is regarded as one of the defining artists of our generation. Is this the correct decade for market growth or is the theory of Nostalgia off? Comment below to add to the list. There industry experts that have financial models, historical data, and a team of researchers that have made a science out of predicting the collector car market, but based on an unproven theory of a market fueled by nostalgia this is my short watchlist for the not to distant future. As a person ages they tend to become more financially well-healed as they have a stronger desire to relive their youth. Life stages tend to predict when most people have disposable income and can afford to purchase a luxury item such as a vehicle that is not used for the daily commute. Obviously there is the financial part of the equation which is probably why the majority of collector vehicles are considered 'old cars'. Reminiscing about our youth is only one part of what drives the market and/or the purchase of a collector vehicle. Jay Quail the Executive Director of The Classic Car Club of America states that, "Usually the first car in a 'collection' is the car that was either driven or desired by an individual while they attended high school." Jay followed up by saying "Investment decisions on collector cars similar to the stock market, are usually not part of the purchasing decision until the emotional factors have been satisfied." The desire to own something associated with an individuals youth seems to be almost universal. Anyone who has spent time attending car events has most certainly heard someone say, "I wish I would have kept mine" or "I should have never sold it". ![]()
